Arrogance is often considered a manifestation of highly developed self-confidence. In reality, however, these two attitudes are completely different and the ability to distinguish them can greatly facilitate our lives.

What is arrogance?

Arrogance is bold self-confidence combined with disrespect for others. An arrogant person will behave superiorly towards their surroundings in every situation, disdain the opinions of others, discredit the successes of friends or colleagues. All of this, of course, with the conviction that they themselves have already reached the peak of perfection in all areas of life.

It is difficult to deny that in some environments, arrogant behavior is more visible. This may especially apply to certain prominent positions in companies. Of course, this does not mean that “ordinary” people never come into contact with attitudes such as boldness or impudence in everyday life. The ability to correctly interpret similar behavior will certainly save us a lot of nerves.

What does arrogance show?

Arrogance is often associated with self-confidence. However, psychologists emphasize that arrogance and self-confidence should never be treated as equivalent traits because these two attitudes are actually opposite.

So what is the difference? Self-confidence is a positive attribute; it demonstrates that a person can realistically assess their own abilities and has a deep awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of their personality. They are not afraid of being criticized by others, can admit their mistakes, and display optimism towards the world on a daily basis.

Arrogance is a posture of superiority, in fact a way to cover up one’s own insecurities and constantly emphasize the importance of their successes. It should be noted that the arrogant person usually has an extremely hierarchical view of the world – they disdain those whom they consider inferior.

How not to be arrogant?

Arrogance is not a trait that is born overnight. It is the result of complex experiences and decisions from childhood. Adequate upbringing can to some extent protect us from it, although it is not a guarantee.

However, if we know what it means to be arrogant, it should be easier for us to avoid this type of behavior. First of all, let’s try to create and cultivate a positive relationship with ourselves, as well as with other people and the world. Let’s cultivate an understanding of human flaws, appreciate our own successes as well as those of others. This attitude is the most effective cure for pathological arrogance.
